Noted as Mary Ann Chapman in the 1851 census. The following appeared in the Aldershot News on 10th January 1941 FARNBOROUGH CENTENARIAN DEATH AND FUNERAL Farnborough's oldest resident, Mrs Mary Ann Weatherhead, of 22, High View Road, passed away on Saturday evening at the great age of 100. She would have been 101 next April, and passed away peacefully. She leaves one son, Mr Albert Weatherhead, who lives in York Road, Farnborough, and is 71, and a daughter of 69, Mrs Mary Gould of 13, Coleman Road, Aldershot. She also had 17 grandchildren, one of whom is in the Army and 22 great-grandchildren, with three serving in the three branches of the forces. Born in Farnborough-Street, Mrs Weatherhead learnt at an early age to groom and harness her father's coach horses. She and her brother were very proud when they acted as postillions for Queen Victoria, then a young married woman. One of her most vivid childhood memories was the building of the railway station in Farnborough-Street, on the Reading-Guildford line, almost at their front door. At the age of 15, when soldiers were beginning to return from the Crimean War, she left her home and went into service, earning a shilling a week. Several years later, while employed at the officers' mess at Shornecliffe, she met her future husband, a Private in the 1st Battalion of the 24th Foot, now the South Wales Borderers. They were married when she was 22, and when the regiment was sent abroad she travelled with her husband to Malta, Gibraltar, Capetown and King William's Town. Most of their seven children were born while they were in different parts of the Empire, one of them aboard ship, but only five survived to return to England. Her husband, then a corporal, was killed in the Zulu War of 1879, where the 24th suffered great losses, only two months before he would have completed his 21 years service. Mrs Weatherhead then found employment with the Empres Eugenie at Farnborough Hill, where she remained for over 40 years. Mrs Weatherhead was a wonderful old lady, and lived alone after the death of her brother, three years ago. She was able to do all her own work until quite recently. Her son and daughter and several of her grandchildren visited her regularly. There is some contemporary discrepancy as to her birth year. Noted as 6 years old in 1851 census (correct) Noted as 21 years old at marriage, Dec 1864 (should be 20) Noted as 37 years old in 1881 census (should be 36) Noted as 57 years old in 1901 census (should be 36) Therefore, probable birth year is 1843, making her 97 when she died in January 1941, three years younger than published above. Now known (09-12-2004) that she was born in April 1844. Now in possession of birth certificate (30-12-2004) which shows her as being born on 14th April 1844, thus only 96 when she died.
